Chiune Sugihara, a Japanese diplomat who served as the vice-consul of the Japanese Consulate in Kaunas, Lithuania during World War II.

Defying the orders of his superiors, he issued transit visas to over 6,000 Jews to enter in Japan.

He worked tirelessly nearly one month, writing visas by hand until the consulate was closed.

He later said, “I may have to disobey my government, but if I don’t, I would be disobeying God. I knew that somebody would surely complain about me in the future. But I myself thought this would be the right thing to do. There is nothing wrong in saving many people’s lives….The spirit of humanity, philanthropy…neighborly friendship…with this spirit, I ventured to do what I did, confronting this most difficult situation—and because of this reason, I went ahead with redoubled courage.”

Sugihara died in July 31st, 1986 at the age of 86. He was recognized as Righteous Among the Nations by Israel in 1985.

The lesson that we should take from him is that Recognize the inherent value in every person, our shared humanity transcends all barriers. This story is a call to see ourselves in others and act with compassion, even in the face of great risk.
